Tips for Creating a Spring Workout Regime

Harvest Green - Tips for Creating a Spring Workout Regime

February 27, 2025

Spring is the season where everything feels fresh and new, making it the perfect time to kickstart your fitness goals. But let’s be real — diving into a new fitness routine can be as intimidating as trying to spell "quinoa" on the first try. Luckily, we know a thing or two about fitness. So, no more hiding under blankets and pretending that binge-watching TV counts as cardio, it’s time to plant the seeds for a healthier, happier you.

Start With a Plan

Before diving headfirst into your spring fitness routine, you need a game plan. Think of this as prepping your garden before planting. Assess your current fitness level. Are you a couch potato looking to sprout into something more active? Or perhaps a seasoned athlete ready to “turnip” the heat? Understanding where you stand will help you pick the right activities and prevent any potential injuries.

Set Some Goals

Whether you're looking to boost your stamina, build muscle or simply enjoy the great outdoors more, having specific targets can keep you focused and motivated. Keep in mind that fitness is a marathon, not a sprint. Small, consistent steps are more effective than drastic changes. Consider adding an extra cardio workout or pick up some slightly heavier weights once a week.

Consider Your Limitations

Consider any physical limitations or past injuries you might have. Consulting with a healthcare professional or a personal trainer can provide valuable insights and help tailor a safe and effective fitness plan.

Gear Up

The changing weather can also affect your workout routine. Make sure you have the appropriate gear, like breathable clothing and supportive footwear, to keep comfortable and safe during your activities. Staying hydrated is equally important, so always have water handy, especially for those longer outdoor sessions.

Mix It Up

Don’t forget to mix it up. Monotony is the enemy of progress, so add some variety to your routine. One day you might focus on strength training, another on flexibility and another on cardio. This way, you’ll keep things fresh.

Embrace the Outdoors

Spring is the ideal season to embrace the outdoors and spice up your fitness routine. Trade in the treadmill for a jog through some trails. It’s a calorie-burning, mood-boosting adventure with the added bonus of fresh air and maybe a squirrel or two cheering you on. Love yoga? Take it out of the studio and onto the lawn. If you’re a social butterfly, how about joining a friendly game of volleyball or a casual soccer match? Even a walk through the neighborhood will have you burning calories.

The Gym Has Its Uses

We said you should venture beyond the gym, not give it up entirely. Building strength is crucial, especially if you're planning to hike those rugged trails or power through lengthy bike rides. Focus on compound movements like squats, lunges and deadlifts; these exercises engage multiple muscle groups, giving you the power and endurance you need for more challenging outdoor activities. Treadmill running or a vigorous spin class can boost your stamina, ensuring you don't tire easily when you're out exploring. Yoga or Pilates sessions in the gym can improve your range of motion and stability.

Don’t Forget to Eat

Still feeling the holidays around your middle? Time to embrace a healthier diet. Replace heavier, winter favorites with spring-fresh fruits, veggies and legumes. Not sure where to start? Buy a vegetarian cookbook and test the side dishes or institute Meatless Mondays. Join a CSA to get farm-fresh spring vegetables delivered to you.
