The $5 million project to extend University Boulevard North from Hwy. 6 to Hwy. 90 in Sugar Land has been completed. The roadway extension opened to motorists Nov. 11.
The extension was constructed as a four-lane boulevard section and includes a bridge over Ditch H, which is an important piece of drainage infrastructure in the city. University Boulevard now provides a continuous route from Hwy. 90 in Sugar Land to Hwy. 6 in Missouri City, and is designed to improve mobility and reduce congestion by providing an additional north-south corridor, said Doug Adolph, assistant director of communications for Sugar Land.
The project to construct the extension was a joint partnership between the Texas Department of Transportation, Fort Bend County and the city of Sugar Land. University Boulevard North is one of several projects included in the Fort Bend County Mobility Program and the Transportation Improvement Program, and is also identified in Sugar Land’s Master Thoroughfare Plan, Adolph said.
As part of the city’s plan, the final piece of the University Boulevard extension—which is now in the design phase in coordination with Union Pacific Railroad, Nalco Champion and the Imperial Development—will include a direct connector to Burney Road within the Imperial development. The extension will cross Hwy. 90 at street level and is expected to include a bridge over Oyster Creek and the Union Pacific Railroad, according to designs.
