Harvest Green - Farm Club — It's Not Just for FarmersOctober 21, 2017
Have you always had a secret desire to till the soil and bring home the fruits (and vegetables) of your labor? Well, if you make the move to Harvest Green, you can do that and more through our recently formed Farm Club! Farm Club is a way for Harvest Green residents to satiate their appetite for sustainable agriculture by renting growing plots and learning how to grow their own food with the help of our awesome Farm Educators. After introductory meetings headed up by Farmer Ryan and Paulette the Hen (who was available for chicken-related questions) and an orientation where they were able to familiarize themselves with the tools, equipment and materials they will be using, Farm Club members met on Oct. 21 for a farm breakfast before embarking on their adventures in agriculture. This season, members will be growing cool weather crops such as cabbage, kale, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, carrots and parsnips to start with. Our farmers will be providing seeds and some live starts for transplanting. Members are free to grow what they want and are not required to follow any plan, but our Farm Educators are happy to make season-appropriate and cultivar recommendations to improve success. Membership in the club is $50 per month and includes access to four 15-foot long growing beds, hand tools, organic fertilizers, seeds and transplants, classes, guest speakers and Farm Club member events. While Farm Club allows residents to take a more direct approach to food production. Harvest Green residents enjoy other methods of bringing the farm to the table including our weekly on-site farmers market, the option to install backyard vegetable gardens and front-door delivery of produce through a CSA program. |
