Trinity Falls - Experience the Fruits of the Farm in McKinneyJune 09, 2017
If you have ever wanted to pick your own blackberries, send your kids to farm camp or immerse yourself in the farm-to-table lifestyle, then Trinity Falls is the perfect home for you. Offering a prime McKinney location, Trinity Falls residents enjoy access to visitor-friendly farms and restaurants serving locally sourced produce, meats and other goodies. Just one mile away from our lush community lies Pure Land Organic Farm, 7505 County Road 201. Father-daughter farmers Jack and Megan Neubauer left the corporate world to work their 28-acre organic farm five years ago, seeing that there was a real need for fresh, local produce in the area. From the beginning, they decided to have an open farm. “We want people to come out and learn about farming and organic growing practices,” Megan said. “It is so important that people — especially children — learn about where their food comes from and how buying locally benefits the community.” Pure Land is an example of what Neubauer calls “agritourism,” a place where agriculture and tourism meet for fun and educational purposes. “Agritourism is going out to the country to a farm to participate in a range of activities from u-pick to farm dinners,” she said. “People have been driving out to the country to pick apples since the ‘60s, but as populations have grown and people have become more concentrated in the cities and suburbs, they really want to feel a connection to the outdoors and to the food on their plates.” Pure Land Organic hosts school field trips, Girl Scout badge earning programs and even farm dinners. For two weeks at the beginning of June, the Neubauers’ are welcoming visitors to the farm to pick their own blackberries. Megan hopes to have week-long farm camps for children up and running next year, getting kids away from their screens and closer to their food. Beyond blackberries, the farm produces peaches, tomatoes, peppers, beets, carrots, kale and other greens, sweet potatoes, okra, green beans — 50 percent of which they sell to McKinney’s farm-to-table restaurants including Harvest Seasonal Kitchen and Patina Green Home & Market. More unique dining can be found at Table Zer0, which offers the opportunity to dine on long farm tables in the garden or greenhouse of Lake Forest Farm, 3355 Ryan Trail. The 18-acre farm is home to upward of 50 pasture-raised hens, three ducks, two wildcats, two tanks-full of fish who power aquaponic grow beds, and countless bees in addition to fruits and vegetables. For those hoping to bring the farm to their own dining table, McKinney hosts what is widely considered one of the top farmers markets in Texas on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, April 1-Nov. 4. In addition, Trinity Falls residents can have farm-fresh produced delivered directly to their door through Harvest to House a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. |
