Trinity Falls - Practically Perfect Summer Picnic Spots

What do you need for the perfect summer picnic? Nice weather, delicious food and — because it’s Texas — a covered pavilion with a splash pad or pool nearby. Fortunately for Trinity Falls residents, they have just such a spot at The Club in Trinity Falls! But if you want to venture out (or aren’t lucky enough to live here!) McKinney is full of perfect picnic destinations. So pack a basket, grab some swimsuits and prepare for a food-filled, fun-filled day.
McKinney offers nearly 50 parks for families to play in, but here are some of our favorites:
Ash Woods 10301 John F. Kennedy Blvd., McKinney, TX 75070 972-547-7330 This lovely neighborhood park is one of nine McKinney parks boasting a splash pad. There’s also a playground, a pavilion and plenty of room to throw a Frisbee or a football.
Bonnie Wenk Park 2996 W. Virginia Pkwy., McKinney, TX 75071 972-547-7331 There’s so much to do at Bonnie Wenk Park, you may have to plan more than one picnic. Enjoy the five-acre fishing lake, lighted hike-and-bike trails, an outdoor amphitheater and a dog park.
Dog Park at Bonnie Wenk Park 2996 W. Virginia Pkwy., McKinney, TX 75071 972-547-7331 If your family includes a furry Fido, then the dog park at Bonnie Wenk Park is the perfect picnic spot for you. The two-acre, fenced, off-leash park features separate areas for big and small dogs, a splash pad to keep them cool and a shaded area where both dogs and humans can enjoy some treats.
Erwin Park 4300 County Road 1006 McKinney TX 75071 972-547-7480 Offering three picnic pavilions, shady trees, 10 campfire sites and seven-miles of mountain bike trails, Erwin Park is a popular place for picnics that start in the morning and last through the evening.
Finch Park 301 W. Standifer St., McKinney TX 75069 972-547-7330 Ideal for large family gatherings, Finch Park offers shaded picnic areas, a splash pad, lighted tennis courts, two large picnic pavilions and a large playground.
North Park 1701 N. McDonald St., McKinney TX 75071 972-547-7330 Aquatic Center: 972-542-9718 There are many advantages to choosing North Park as your picnic destination, the foremost being the Juanita Maxfield Aquatic Center. For less than $2 per person, per visit, you can enjoy the pool, diving area and some fun floating amenities.
Old Settler's Park 1201 E. Louisiana St., McKinney, TX 75069 972-542-5014 Old Settler’s Park is a community favorite as it is part of the Old Settler’s Recreation Area. The park features 29 acres of sports fields, picnic areas and hiking and biking trails. Nearby you will find the Old Settler’s Aquatic Facility, which boasts an open flume slide, floor bubbles, lemon drop sprayers and a cascading waterfall.
Towne Lake Recreation Area 1405 Wilson Creek Pkwy., McKinney, TX 75069 (972) 542-4865 Located across from McKinney High School, this 108-acre park offers tons of water-related fun. The center of the park is a 22-acre lake with two fountains. Cast a line off the fishing pier or rent a paddle boat for a lazy turn around the lake. Active families can play on the playgrounds, volleyball courts or disk-golf course. Afterward, retire to the picnic shelter for a well-deserved lunch break.
