No Homework Night is Family Night

Cross Creek Ranch - No Homework Night is Family Night

September 25, 2018

Students at all Katy ISD schools — including our on-site Randolph and Campbell elementary schools — will again enjoy a once-a-month break from math worksheets, spelling words and history questions in honor of “family night.”

In an effort to encourage more family time, teachers from elementary to high school will not assign homework on designated Wednesday nights. Six of these family nights are scheduled this school year. The next one is Oct. 17.

No-homework nights became official district policy last year. The goal is to encourage family gatherings, family dinners or going out together — anything geared around family.

Studies have shown that spending time with the family is just as important to academic and life-long success as homework. A recent Duke University study demonstrated that homework assigned in elementary schools made no noticeable difference on student achievement and brought only a modest difference in middle and high school student performance.

We applaud Katy ISD for giving families a break from homework so kids can be kids. We are looking forward to seeing our families out enjoying our recreation complexes, trails, wildlife observation areas and more on Oct. 17.
