Travis High School Preps for College Success

Which high schools best prep their students for college success? That’s the question GreatSchools asks when it names the winners of its annual College Success Award and one of the answers is our own Travis High School.

GreatSchools is a national non-profit seeking to empower parents to provide the best educational opportunities for their children. GreatSchools rates schools across the nation on the quality of their teachers, academics, equity and environment. High schools are also rated on how well-prepared students are for college. The most outstanding are presented with the College Success Award.

Travis was one of only 21 percent — or 2,158 schools across 29 states — to receive the award. It was one of 314 schools in Texas. This is the second year in a row the school has received the award.

The data used to evaluate high schools includes school-level college readiness and postsecondary data shared by their state, such as the number of students who enroll in college, those who are prepared for college-level coursework and those who remain in college beyond their first year. Schools are rated on a scale of one to 10.

Travis was rated 9 out of 10. Each year, 98 percent of Travis seniors graduate. Last year, 77 percent of those graduates went on to a two- or four-year college.

The secrets to Travis’ success are many. More than 32 percent of the teachers hold advanced degrees. Among the 200 possible course selections available to students are more than 20 Advanced Placement classes. Of the students that go on to take AP tests, 71 percent pass at least one with a score of 3 or higher.

Of course, colleges want to see more on an application than good grades and high test scores. They want well-rounded students who have participated in extra-curricular activities. Travis offers UIL-sponsored athletic programs, art and music programs, clubs and activities. Everything a student needs to be accepted into college.

We’re very proud of our Travis Tigers and can’t wait for the class of 2021 to graduate and attend the colleges of their dreams.
