Flewellen Creek Restoration Now Complete

Cross Creek Ranch - Flewellen Creek Restoration Now Complete

April 01, 2021

Thirteen years and now our baby is all grown up — or should we say “complete.”

The restoration of Flewellen Creek in Cross Creek Ranch is now finished.

What was originally little more than an agricultural ditch running through the community when development began 13 years ago is now a fully restored stream meandering two miles from the community’s northern boundary to its southern edge. Restoration included widening the creek and expanding its shore, planting thousands of trees, tall grasses and other native plants. The creek is now a nature preserve wildlife habitat for birds and small animals.

Flewellen Creek is also a signature feature in Cross Creek Ranch. Not only is it a place residents can explore or stroll along the path winding alongside the water, it is the anchor for several amenities. Arbor Sports Park is located within the Flewellen Creek Nature Preserve, offering tennis courts, a basketball court, a sand volleyball court, playgrounds and a covered pavilion. It is also the primary access into the Flewellen Creek Disc Golf Course, which uses the natural environment to create a challenging course for players.

It’s amazing to think of this beautifully restored space — measuring up to 600 feet wide in places and encompassing 150 acres — was once just a simple ditch and drainage channel. Today, it is one of the most beloved amenities found at Cross Creek Ranch. It’s also award-winning, with the Houston-Galveston Area Council giving the project a Parks and Natural Areas restoration award in 2014, after less than two phases had been completed.
