Why Yes, We’re Certified Organic!

Harvest Green - Why Yes, We’re Certified Organic!

March 22, 2022

Our farm-fresh produce recently got a new label — “Certified Organic!”

The United States Department of Agriculture gave the vegetables, fruit and herbs grown on our Village Farm its stamp of approval, meaning we can now officially call what we grow “certified organic.”

We’ve always grown our produce using organic practices, such as organic seed, cover cropping, habitat preservation, natural pest control, organic fertilizer many other farm management practices. Up until now, we haven’t been able to call or food organic, though.

What’s the difference between using organic farming methods and being certified organic?

Being certified means we have passed inspection to ensure that our recordkeeping and field practices fully align with federal and state standards. To be considered “certified organic,” we underwent a three-year “transition process” to ensure our soil was free from contaminates.

Last spring, we applied for certification through the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA). The farm was inspected earlier this year by an independent third-party inspector to verify that the farm’s organic systems plan is being followed. Once the report was reviewed, we received certification.

We are now one of only three certified organic vegetable farms in the Southeast Texas area. That’s very special!

How can you get our certified organic produce? Our farmers market, open from 8 a.m. to noon on the first and third Saturdays of the month, is a great (and fun) place to start. You can also stop by our produce stand every week.

Our residents also can get a box full of organic goodies via our CSA program. Want to join in the fun? Make your move to Harvest Green today.
