Dress Up Your Dog for ‘Howl-o-ween’

Veranda - Dress Up Your Dog for ‘Howl-o-ween’

September 26, 2022

They say every dog has its day, and if Halloween is your dog’s, have we got some costume ideas for you! Where should you show your precious pooch off? How about our spooktacular “Howl-o-ween paw-ty”?

We’re “raising the woof” to celebrate the opening of Canine Cove, our new dog park, from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. The park is located at 24225 Wildwood Park Road, and everyone is invited. There will be music, games, pet vendors, a photo booth, food trucks, “yappy hour” and more.

Of course, there will be a canine costume contest. The “com-pet-tion” is sure to be “ruff” but with our costume ideas, your pup is sure to make a winning impression.

Dress To Impress (But Safely)

When it comes to choosing a costume, think safety first. Avoid costumes that do not fit, and that have small components that your dog can choke on. Check the weather. Some costumes feature heavy fabrics that can cause your dog to overheat. Your dog should be able to stand, walk, sit and lie down in the costume. Keep in mind that your dog’s harness may have to fit over the costume.

Make Sure Fido is Fierce (But Happy)

Not all dogs are hams. If your dog doesn’t like clothes, it will probably not like a fussy Halloween costume. Instead, purchase a Halloween-themed collar and leash or a bandana. You could also attach butterfly wings to the harness or find a small headpiece. If you have a small dog, put him in a stroller decorated for Halloween.

Consider Your Pup’s Personality

You know your dog best. What costume fits her personality? Is he bold and daring? Let him sail the high seas as a pirate. Is your pup a sweetie pie? Try this teddy bear or angel costume. If your dog loves patrolling the yard, this police dog outfit might be right up his alley.

Let Your Dog Be a Hero

Have no fear, your furry superhero is here! Dressing your dog up like your favorite superhero is fun and they look adorable. You can even go as a couple. Imagine your dog playing Robin to your Dark Knight. Your princess can dress up as Wonder Woman with you holding her golden lariat (leash). You can’t have a superhero party without Super Dog

Got a Chow Hound?

Will your dog do anything for a treat? Dress her up as her favorite food. This taco costume is super cute. If your dog loves pupsicles, he might enjoy dressing up in this latte costume. Got a hot dog? Show him off!

Let’s Get Spooky

Sure, you could go cute and adorable then again… There are plenty of spooky costumes the “pup-a-razzi” will love. We have to admit even we would think twice about crossing this deadly dog. Who isn’t afraid of spider dogs? Did you and Fido binge-watch Stranger Things? This costume will bring back all the scary memories.

Final Tip

Rehearse with your dog. Before Howl-o-Ween, dress your dog in the costume multiple times. This way, you can see how your dog reacts to the costume, and if it fits properly. If your dog shows signs of pacing or excessive panting, paws or claws at the costume, or refuses to move, then the costume is stressing your dog. If that happens, opt to accessorize your dog with bows, collars and headbands instead.
