Harvest Green - May Farm Report

Well, in an interesting turnaround, April flowers brought May showers. Still, we persevered, had fun and harvested a lot of delicious produce. Here’s what happened last month.

We Paid Tribute to Mom

In May we helped families pay tribute to their moms at our farmers market. Marketgoers were able to create their own beautiful bouquets from a selection of varieties grown on the Village Farm. We also expect to have a limited supply of flowers available at subsequent markets taking place 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturdays, rain or shine.

Farm Offered Tomato Tours

May is peak tomato season on the farm, so it was only fitting that our monthly farm tour celebrated this versatile fruit. (Yes, tomatoes are technically fruits). Farm Educators showed off the fascinating lower and lean method they use with their tunnel tomatoes. Guests also got a sneak peek of all the produce coming into season for summer. We’ve Got Tomatoes and Potatoes

As we mentioned, May was prime tomato season. Farmers have been harvesting a mix of cherry tomatoes and just saw our slicing varieties mature. We suggest you run, don’t walk to our farmers market to snag some because tomato production winds down significantly in June. We also harvested more than 200 pounds of potatoes in May. We grow them in boxes to take advantage of the loamier soil. Right now, the potatoes are curing to help toughen up their skins and give them a longer shelf life. If you’re a Veggie Share member, you’ll be able to add them to your shares in the next couple of weeks! 

In Season

Summer crops are coming. Expect to see are bitter melon, long beans, okra, amaranth, and striped Armenian cucumbers. You can also pick up slicing tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, banana peppers, jalapeno peppers, shishito peppers, green bell peppers, beans, Italian eggplant, Asian eggplant, zucchini, summer squash, Tromboncino squash, fennel, celery, carrots, beets, leeks, onions, kale, Swiss chard, collards, basil and parsley.
