Harvest Green - June Farm ReportJuly 01, 2024
Happy summer everyone! After a rather wet spring, we’ve turned the corner and have been enjoying sunshine, watermelon and some family-friendly activities. Here’s what our summer vacation has been looking like: New Farmers Market Hours June was the month our farmers market shifted to summer hours. From now through September, join us 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturdays, rain or shine (but mostly shine) for farm fresh produce, artisanal food and plenty of fun. Residents Celebrate La Tomatina Padre June saw the return of one of our most popular resident-only events, La Tomatina Padre. This celebration of the mighty tomato included inflatables and a local chef serving up farm-inspired light bites crafted from our summer produce stores. That was just the warmup for the main event —watching loving children pelt their fathers with ripe tomatoes. We even created new T-shirts for the occasion. La Tomatina Padre is one of many events created especially for our residents. Want to join in the fun next year? Purchase a home in Harvest Green today! Meet Our Farm Have you ever visited a working farm? No? Then you need to sign up for one of our Meet the Farm Tours. Once a month we take people on a short tour of our Village Farm. During the tour you will learn about what vegetables are in season and get to taste the fruits of our labors (hint, this summer it’s watermelon). You’ll also have an opportunity to visit with our famed goats and chickens. The next tours take place 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, June 27 and Aug. 24. Where Are the Watermelons Where are the sweetest watermelons around? Being harvested as we speak. We started offering farm-fresh watermelon at the farmers market in June. We have two different varieties available — Sugar Baby and Tom. Sugar Baby melons are small enough to fit inside your picnic basket. Tom melons are a little larger. Both sport green skin and red flesh. They are sweet, refreshing and perfect for your summer barbecue! Pick some up at the farmers market this Saturday. In Season Watermelon, okra, long beans, bitter melon, slicing tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, Shishito peppers, assorted sweet peppers, assorted hot peppers, Italian eggplant, Asian eggplant, zucchini, summer squash, Tromboncino squash, onions, leeks, basil and parsley.
