Harvest Green - July Farm Report

Hurricane Beryl made July an eventful month for the Village Farm. However, we were able to weather the storm and provide our farm fresh veggies to residents and farmers market goers without a hitch. Here are some July highlights:

After the Hurricane

We hope everyone is doing well in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. If you are interested in how the Village Farm fared, it made it through the storm with some damage, but luckily, farmers were prepared. They removed the plastic covering from the three tunnels prior to the hurricane. They will need repairs, but it could have been worse. Unfortunately, most of the crops in the first two tunnels did not survive. The third tunnel was planted with peppers. They are mostly unscathed, and you will see many varieties at the farmers market.

As you might expect, there was also damage to our fields. Once they dried out, farmers were able to flip some of the beds and plant another round of summer crops.

In Case You Were Wondering…

In case you were wondering, the farmers market is open for business. Join us 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturdays, rain or shine, for farm fresh produce, artisanal food and plenty of fun.

There Will Be Farm Tours

Our Meet the Farm Tours will happen on schedule. You will be able to take a short tour of our farm and sample some of the produce we are growing. It’s a great family activity so sign up today! The next tours take place 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, Aug. 24 and Sept. 28.

More Melons

You won’t find anymore watermelons at our farmers market, but we have other varieties. Korean melons are sweet, juicy, and super refreshing on a hot day. Bitter melons are not sweet. They have a distinct nutty and bitter flavor. Here’s a recipe.

In Season

In season right now are sweet Italian peppers, jalapeno peppers, Aji Rico peppers, banana peppers, butternut squash, red onions, zucchini, long beans, Italian and Asian eggplant, basil, Thai basil, Tromboncino squash, Armenian cucumbers, bitter melon, Korean melon, okra, sweet potato greens, sorrel greens, and Malabar spinach.
