August Farm Report

Harvest Green - August Farm Report

September 02, 2024

This month was a warm one, but we preserved, planted crops, hosted our farmers market and made sure some of Houston‘s best restaurants had our beautiful organic produce on the menu. Here’s a break down of this month’s happenings:

You Can Find Us at Some of Your Favorite Restaurants

Approximately 10 percent of the organic produce we grow on the Village Farm is used by chefs to create delicious seasonal dishes. This summer we had four Houston-area restaurants purchasing everything from eggplant to potato greens. Which ones? Andiron in Houston, Ostia in Montrose, Tiny Champions  in the East End and Nancy's Hustle, also located in the East End. More chefs are expected to buy from us in the fall. Just another great reason to eat out!

Farmers Market

Another way to pick up restaurant quality produce is at our Farmers Market. Join us 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturdays, rain or shine, for farm fresh produce, artisanal food and plenty of fun.

Have You Taken a Tour?

Have you participated in one of our Meet the Farm Tours? You should. What could be better than taking a short tour of our farm followed by sampling some of the seasonal produce we grow. The next tours take place 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, Sept. 28, Oct. 26, Nov. 23 and Dec. 28.

What’s Growing On?

Earlier this month we planted the seeds that will grow into our fall produce. We chose varieties that do well in the Texas heat, and we have great news. By the end of August our seeds were already sprouting, and some were showing their first leaves! We planted Napa cabbage, Black Magic Lacinato kale, Caraflex cabbage and three varieties of Swiss chard in our tunnels. We can’t wait to create fall dishes with these delicious greens.

In Season

Here's what you can find at the Farm Stand this weekend: sweet Italian peppers, jalapeno peppers, Aji Rico peppers, banana peppers, butternut squash, red onions, zucchini, long beans, Italian and Asian eggplant, basil, Thai basil, Tromboncino squash, Armenian cucumbers, bitter melon, Korean melon, okra, sweet potato greens, sorrel (Roselle) greens, holy basil, tarragon, oregano and garlic chives.
