Johnson CEO Named One of Houston’s Most Admired

September 17, 2024

Houston is the seventh largest metro economy in the nation and has more than 175,000 business establishments that include 26 Fortune 500 companies and 48 Fortune 1000 companies. In short, Houston is a business powerhouse.

And that’s why we couldn’t be more proud of Johnson Development CEO Michael Smith to be named among this year’s Most Admired CEOs by the Houston Business Journal.

The publication had the difficult task of whittling down a comprehensive list of candidates to just 60, selected for their career achievements and leadership skills. Serving on nonprofit boards and in various volunteer roles was also taken into account as the honorees’ dedication to the greater community.

Michael joined Johnson Development in 2000, serving in various positions — including Co-President and Chief Operating Officer — until February 2022 when he was named Chief Executive Officer after the passing of company founder Larry Johnson.

During his decades-long career, Michael has managed several large-scale, master-planned communities and has accumulated extensive professional experience in the large-scale land and community development business. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Texas A&M University and a master’s degree in Business Administration. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute, the Greater Houston Home Builders Association, the National Association of Home Builders, Rotary Club International and various economic development organizations. Smith is also a proud veteran of the U.S. Army.

In selecting Michael for this honor, business journal staff noted the success Johnson Development has achieved under Michael’s guidance, driving innovation, fostering a culture of collaboration and demonstrating a commitment to excellence. His employees say, “Michael inspires and motivates us all, setting a high standard for leadership and earning the admiration of employees, stakeholders and the industry as a whole.”

Congratulations to Michael on this well-deserved honor!
