Cross Creek West - CURE-Ageous 5K Fun Run Raises $15,000 to Combat Aggressive Form of CancerOctober 25, 2024
The inaugural CURE-Ageous 5K Fun Run was a “CURE-azy” good time as more than 400 racers converged at Cross Creek West for an event that was as much fun as it was doing good. While we’re always in for a good time, the goal of the CURE-Ageous 5K was to raise funds for The IBC Network Foundation. The event raised $15,000 that will forward the foundation’s mission of educating the public on Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) and putting money toward much-needed research. Participants could choose to run, walk or jog the course that wound through our beautiful community. Kids raced beside parents, little tots rolled along in strollers and there was more than one well-behaved pooch accompanying their humans. Those who registered in advance received participation medals, and women who had faced breast cancer were given a second fighter medal by The IBC Network Foundation. Post-race, eventgoers were treated to yard games, face painting, stilt walkers and goodies from local favorites Chick-fil-A, Mirit’i Coffee and H-E-B. Terry Arnold, founder of The IBC Network Foundation, was on hand to thank everyone for their support and shared a little of her story about her IBC diagnosis 17 years ago when very little was known about the disease. Prior to the race, she and another survivor, JoAnn Hill, appeared on Houston Life to talk about IBC and their survival experience. Rare and often fatal, IBC is the breast cancer you’ve likely never heard of. Because lumps in the breast do not occur, it is hard to diagnose. When it is diagnosed, the disease often has already progressed to stage III or even stage IV. It is characterized by swelling, redness, or an inflamed rash, usually just in one breast. Since it is often considered to be an infection at first, cancer treatment is often delayed. Since its start, The IBC Network Foundation has donated nearly $2 million to research. A huge thank you to our sponsors: Title Sponsor Hanix & Proft Orthodontics, Ethoscapes, Earthcare Management, Perry Homes, Newmark Homes, Lennar/Village Builders, Highland Homes and CCMC. Watch for more CURE-Ageous fun next year in Cross Creek West when the race returns Oct. 18, 2025!
