October Farm Report

Harvest Green - October Farm Report

November 01, 2024

Last month was a month to remember with a fall kick-off and lots of interesting seasonal vegetables that not only celebrated the beauty of fall but also fostered community spirit and sustainability. So, without further ado, here’s what happened in October:

Fall Kick-off at The Farmers Market

October kicked off with a bang at the Farmers Market. The air was crisp, the pumpkins were aplenty, and the energy was palpable. Attendees relished the chance to capture Instagram-worthy photos in our pumpkin patch and bounced around the bounce house. Many attendees had a blast trying their luck with our Farm Game. Prizes ranged from packets of seeds and pumpkins to delightful snacks for our farm animals. Don’t forget to stop by 9 a.m.-1 p.m. every Saturday in November to pick up goodies for your Thanksgiving feast!

We Sowed Seeds at Neill Elementary

We're deeply committed to sowing the seeds of sustainability and education within our community. That’s why we participate in the Harvest of the Month Program at Neill Elementary. One of the things we do is donate our extra seedlings for their school garden when we can. But our commitment doesn’t end with plants. We gifted Neill with small garden tool sets to aid their gardening efforts. By providing them with the necessary tools and plants, we're not only helping to cultivate beautiful gardens but also fostering a new generation of eco-conscious individuals.

Autumn Adventures on the Farm

Have you ever wondered about the magic happening behind the scenes at the Village Farm? Our Meet the Farm Tours offer an enchanting glimpse into our world. Join us for our upcoming tours 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, Nov. 23 and Dec. 28. It's the perfect opportunity to witness firsthand the passion and dedication that goes into every harvest.

Fresh Produce Highlights

October at the farmers market was a feast for the senses, bringing an exciting array of fresh, seasonal produce that had our community buzzing. One of the standout stars was pak choi, a versatile Asian green that's become a fall favorite. Equally anticipated was the return of Hakurei turnips, often referred to as "salad turnips" due to their crisp yet tender texture and distinctive sweet flavor. But the fun didn’t stop there. Komatsuna, another Asian leafy green, also took center stage. With its fresh and mildly sweet cabbage flavor, komatsuna is a delight in both raw and cooked dishes. The next time you are at the farmers market, grab a few. These seasonal delights are sure to bring a burst of flavor and freshness to your table.

In Season

Here's what’s in season at the Village Farm: mustard greens, komatsuna, Tokyo bekana, collard greens, Swiss chard, pak choi, tatsoi, spicy greens mix, arugula, roselle pods, radishes, Hakurei (salad) turnips, sweet Italian peppers, jalapeno peppers, banana peppers, okra, roselle greens and oregano.
